Killing And Preventing Gnats In House And Office

When you see gnats in house or office settings, it is important to get rid of them as soon as possible. These nasty little creatures will lay eggs in a hospitable environment. Soon you will have an entire colony of these irritating bugs buzzing in your ear and driving you mad.

About Gnats

Gnats are tiny, flying insects that are related to fruit flies. Some are carnivorous but most feed on plans. They are probably drawn to your home or office by the smell of rotting food or by watered plants. The humidity calls out to them and can draw them in swarms to your residence. They have a lifespan of only about four months. Unfortunately for you, they spend most of their brief lives laying eggs and preparing to infest your home with their descendants.

Since these bugs are so prolific, time is of the essence after you first notice them. Poisonous sprays have no guarantee of effectiveness because these creatures spend so much time buzzing around in clouds of other gnats. Spraying the air will be just as dangerous for you as for them. However, there is a simple, homemade method for destroying swaths of gnats at a time.

The Vinegar Trap

Vinegar is another smell that attracts gnats. Sugar is a substance that will keep any insect in place for a long time. If you prepare the vinegar trap correctly, then the gnats in your home will bring about their own end. This solution does not smell very good, but it is preferable to being annoyed and bitten by these pests.

Pour a small amount of vinegar and sugar into a jar. Seal the jar with a screw-on cap. Punch holes in this cap with a tool that will leave holes just large enough for the gnats to enter.

The gnats will find themselves unable to exit the jar once they are inside. Most will drown in the mixture of vinegar and sugar. Place one of these traps in each room, if necessary.

Prevention

Now that you have reduced the swarms of bothersome insects in your home or office, determine how to keep more of them from coming back. Unless you like having jars of vinegar sitting around, you probably do not want another bunch of gnats to show up and start the process over again.

Improving the cleanliness of your home will protect you from several different pests. There are some measures which you can take that will work especially well against gnats. The most important thing to do is to make sure that rotting food is not left in any garbage can inside. Food should always go straight to an exterior trash can.

Additionally, check the drain of your sink for any bits of food. You also want to eliminate any places that standing water might be found. If plants get too much water, place them outside to dry out before you bring them back in. This should prevent gnats in house and office spaces.
